Introduction

Welcome to UCI! The Academic Testing Center, under the umbrella of the Division of Undergraduate Education, offers a variety of resources and services to help you make the most of your testing experience this summer. We wish you much success and hope this is a year of growth and accomplishments for you.

This reference guide is designed to provide essential information and assisting with the questions you may have about the placement testing process. We encourage you to read the entire guide – it will save time and trouble later on. Here you will find the most current updates to the policies and procedures.

What Test(s) to take?

You are encouraged to consult with your academic counselor if you don't know which test(s) (if any) you need to take. The Placement Testing Reference Chart and the interactive page of our web site may also prove helpful. This interactive page will indicate which placement test(s) you are required to take (unless you are exempt) based on your responses to the questions posed. You may then refer to the test descriptions found on the Placement Testing Program page of the site for a detailed description of each test and sample test items. Depending on how you intend to fulfill your general education breadth requirements, you may want to take other placement tests. Breadth requirements are described in the UCI General Catalogue and must be completed in order to graduate.

When Are Placement Tests Given?

Placement tests will be offered on the dates listed on the summer tests schedule . Here you will find the Orientation dates that are coordinated with the test dates. You may also click on the summer schedule link above for specific test times and dates..

Why Do You Have to Activate Your UCInetID?

A UCInetID is a 3 to 8 letter code based on your name that uniquely identifies you at UCI. UCInetIDs are used to authorize you, as a UCI affiliate, to gain access to UCI electronic services. These services include establishing your official UCI e-mail account accessing your test results and enrolling in classes. UCInetIDs are automatically issued to all students. However, you must activate your UCInetID to be able to use it. Instructions are provided by UCI's Network and Academic Computing Services (NACS) at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/. UCInetIDs can be activated in early May 2008.

Orientation Programs

All new freshmen must attend summer orientation. UCI offers ten orientation programs for freshmen during July and August. Participation in summer orientation allows you to take your placement tests, be academically advised and register for classes in a timely and coherent manner. You also learn about the campus, student services, and the academic demands which will be placed on you when you come to UCI in the fall. For more information, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at (949) 824-5182 or visit the orientation web site.

How Do You Register for Placement Tests?

Test registration is available online for all test dates. You may register for placement testing when you register for SPOP. You may also register through our web site here. Early registration is advised. Test sites have limited seating and seats are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis. Your desired test date(s) could fill to capacity soon after registration begins and not be available.

Mandatory CheckIn For All Summer Exams

Upon arrival on campus, report directly to the Gateway Plaza (the area located between the Gateway Study Center and the Langson Library--Bldg.#101 on the campus map, to check in. Please note the check-in hours for each testing event. At the check-in table, your two forms of picture ID and your Entry Ticket(s) will be checked, and the specific location of each test along with other essential information and test materials will be provided. Please note that this process is mandatory: you are required to checkin at the Gateway Plaza at least 15 minutes prior to your test time. Tests start and finish on time. Latecomers will not be admitted to the testing room after a test has begun.

Policies on Academic Honesty

The following information is adapted from UCI’s policies on academic dishonesty, adopted by the UCI Academic Senate, June 2, 1988, revised December 12, 1996, October 12, 2000, November 21, 2002, and January 26, 2006. For more information, please check the Registrar’s web pages (http://www.reg.uci.edu) or the section on academic honesty in the UCI General Catalogue, which is available from the UCI Bookstore in mid-July or through the World Wide Web http://www.editor.uci.edu/catalogue/appx/appx.2.htm. You are expected to familiarize yourself with the published rules and regulations governing academic integrity. The University is an institution of learning, research and scholarship predicated on the existence of an environment of honesty and integrity. As members of the academic community, faculty, students and administrative officials share responsibility for maintaining this environment. It is essential that all members of the academic community subscribe to the ideal of academic honesty and integrity and accept individual responsibility for their work. Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the University of California, Irvine. Cheating, forgery, dishonest conduct, plagiarism and collusion in dishonest activities erode he University’s educational, research and social roles. They cheapen the learning experience and its legitimacy not only for the perpetrators but for the entire community.

Academic dishonesty includes the following:

1. Copying from another person’s test or sharing your own work with another examinee

2. Offering another person’s work as your own, such as having your test taken by someone else

3. Taking a test for another person

4. Possessing or using unauthorized materials, prepared notes or answer keys during a test

5. Stealing or attempting to steal materials, prepared notes or answer keys during a test

Taking placement exams is the first step in a student’s academic program at UCI. Therefore, all students taking UCI placement exams have a responsibility to demonstrate academic honesty and integrity. Students may be dismissed from the testing room or may have their scores canceled if they fail to follow any of the testing instructions given by the test proctors or those outlined here for you.

1. Remain quiet throughout the exam. Whispering, talking, writing or any form of communication with anyone except the test proctors during an exam is never appropriate.

2. Remain in your chair until you finish the exam, unless you have permission from a proctor to leave the room.

3. Use only materials approved by the test administrators during the exam. You may not use your own scrap paper.

4. All testing materials should remain on your desk throughout the examination.

5. Stop all work when time has been called.

6. Turn in all examination materials (exam, scantron form and scrap paper) before leaving the room.

Incidents of cheating require that a letter be written describing the incident; this will be sent to the Associate Dean of your academic unit and to the department that provides the test.

Test Results

Results for all tests, except Academic English (AE) and Analytical Writing, will be posted to the website within approximately two hours of the test time. Activation of your UCInetID in early May, is required before accessing results. Results are not available by telephone or by mail.

REMEMBER: You cannot fail a placement test, and your test results do not affect your admission to UCI. We simply want to make sure that you are placed into courses that are appropriate for your selected major and current level of aptitude.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Disability Services Center (DSC) provides assistance to students whose disabilities involve conditions affecting mobility, vision, hearing, learning and mental or physical health. If you have a documented disability (permanent or temporary) and are eligible to receive an accommodation for placement testing, please contact DSC (http://www.disability.uci.edu) as soon as possible. Please note that registering for the placement test(s) and requesting testing accommodations are two different processes; you must complete each step separately. Documentation of your disability must be received by DSC prior to taking the placement test(s) to allow adequate time for the necessary arrangements. For more information see the link above or just click here.

UCI Photo ID Cards

Every student at UCI is required to have a valid UCI Photo ID card. This card is the primary piece of identification that shows you are a UCI student. It is pretty hard to get around campus without this card, so be sure to get yours as soon as you arrive. For your convenience, the UCItems (Photo ID office) will be open, in the summer, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to take and issue Photo ID cards. Please bring or know your student ID number when you come to have your UCI ID picture taken. UCItems is located in the Student Center, G203. Call UCItems for additional information at (949) 824-7555.

Parking on Testing Days

You may park in Structure SCPS (see campus map). Parking permits are required. They may be purchased from the attendant at the entrance to the parking structure. The cost is $2 per hour or $7 per day. Do not park in metered, service, or reserved spaces. If you park in a location other than SCPS, an attendant may not be on duty to sell you a permit. In such a case, please purchase a permit from a kiosk (noted by a star on the map). You may also visit the parking office website here.

Filing Out the Scantron Answer Sheet

You will need a special answer sheet (machine-readable Scantron form) for each test you will be taking. We will supply the Scantron forms on testing days. Familiarize yourself with the following tips, as failure to fill out the form properly may preclude your placement test(s) from being scored.

Tips to remember for marking your Scantron answer sheet(s):

  • Tips to remember for marking your Scantron answer sheet(s)
  • Use a No. 2 black lead pencil only. Mechanical pencils, felt-tip pens, ink pens, or ballpoint pens
    cannot be used.
