If you read and speak a language other than English, you have the opportunity to satisfy one of the following General Education requirements that have lower-division language course options.
1. Language Other Than English (Category VI) general education requirement. This requirement consists of competency through the 1C level of language course work (or its equivalent). Demonstrating competency through the 1C and/or 2A levels of UCI language course work may fulfill the Category VI requirement.
2. International/Global Issues (Category VIII) Students must complete one course from the following list. In fulfilling category VIII, students are encouraged to use courses that are also being used in fulfillment of other GE categories. In addition, category VIII may be satisfied by one quarter's participation in the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) or one quarter's participation in an International Opportunities Program (IOP) with an approved IOP Credit Contract. Summer study abroad on an EAP or IOP (with approved IOP Credit Contract) satisfies this requirement when the program is at least five weeks long and the student completes at least one course worth at least four quarter units.
You should take the language exemption exam if you have a strong background in a language other than English. Tests are available in all of the languages listed on the right. To inquire about the availability of tests in other languages, contact the Testing Center directly.
Each exam may be taken only once. No university credit is given. No fee is required to take an exam if you are a currently enrolled UCI student. However, a deposit is required for some exams.
Registration for these exams is restricted to the second week of each quarter. To register, please come in person with two photo IDs to the Testing Center during that week. Results will not be available by telephone; rather you will be notified via e-mail when results are available during week seven. At that time, you may collect your results in person by presenting two photo ID's in the office. Otherwise, notification will be sent to your academic unit during Finals Week. However, the results will not appear on your transcript.
If you need further information on language testing, please e-mail the Testing Center at firstname.lastname@example.org, call (949) 824-6207, or stop by our office. Click on Map for location.
